They inarguably have the best seat in the house. They get to see the couples’ emotions and audience reactions. They conduct the whole ceremony. OBVIOUSLY I’m referring to a marriage celebrant.
But, I have often wondered- what is it like to be where they stand? What does the celebrant see?
To answer my question’s I’ve enlisted the wisdom of marriage celebrant extraordinaire, Annie Scott.
Annie has officially been a Commonwealth- Registered Marriage Celebrant since September last year after an itch to do something creative involving people and travel became too hard to scratch. Her first wedding was in October 2015 and since then Annie has a number of weddings under her belt, a lot of them rural.
I asked Annie her thoughts on why a rural wedding is better than an urban wedding, and in typical celebrant fashion, its all about the love. “It’s (country weddings) just a lot more personal. When the wedding is in a rural place, it’s the backyard of the family home, or the property, and so there’s the family ties right there. Because of that there’s just so much real love and it’s more inclusive for the crowd.” I have to agree with Annie’s views here, having a rural wedding allows the guests to connect with the couple on a deeper level by being invited onto a place that holds such significance to the couple.
Anyways, enough about that. What I really wanted you to know by reading this is that celebrants are human too. When you’re a guest and getting choked up by the groom’s loving vows, just spare a thought for the celebrant who is feeling the love just as much but has to try and hold it together for the sake of the wedding. If Annie loses it completely the bride will lose it and then its an awkward game of calming each other down, while on show to the whole crowd. Has she ever cried while officiating a marriage? Yes. Did she lose it completely? No. “I did cry the other day… The bride noticed.”
I personally think that its really nice and kind of special that Annie, as the celebrant not guest, got a bit choked up. I think its because she becomes so invested in their feelings and the relationship. How can you not? Your job as the celebrant is to literally take a relationship to the next level. A lot brides assume control when it comes to organizing the wedding day, that’s all well and good – go girls!, but Annie likes to include the groom. “I want to make sure I’ve established a relationship with the groom so they feel included. I want the groom to know that they can tell me if they’ve got an issue.”
So what is it like standing behind the alter? What does a celebrant see? “Well, the grooms are usually pretty good at keeping their emotions together, but they stumble over their vows a little which I think is really sweet. And with the brides that’s (vows) when they seem nervous and you see the real emotions.” I would call that the #bestjobever! How lucky to be invited to the stage of a wedding.
Annie’s business is called Marry Me Annie. She is open to all kinds of clients “There are no limits to where I will go to officiate a wedding in Australia. I am not judgemental when it comes to location, religion, rituals, languages/culture and such in ceremonies, I want everything to be perfect for the couple and I want to make sure I have done everything I can to make it that way. It’s their day.”

Some of the most unique and enchanting pieces of furniture I’ve ever seen, let alone seen at a wedding, come from Ivory Lane. Ivory Lane is an event styling, planning, stationary and hiring company (YES, talk about the whole package) run by Jane and Joel Brennan.
Jane and Joel pretty much begun their business when they got married back in January 2013. Jane had made a lot of the decorations herself to keep the costs down, so this meant sewing all the runners (that were hessian of course as this was back in 2013), she also sourced a lot of other pieces of furniture that the local hire companies didn’t stock. After the wedding the couple found that they had 16 tables worth of “gear”. Their friends and friends of friends started borrowing the items they had accumulated for their own weddings and parties.
The styling side of Ivory Lane progressed naturally from then on as Jane is incredibly arty (day job is a high school art teacher) and has an interest in interior design. Ivory Lane started off by catering heavily towards the rustic bride. So think hessian runners, mason jar vases etc. Now Jane says they’re slowly transitioning from rustic towards a “clean modern rustic” that Jane describes as having “cleaner lines rather than stuff that looks like its been pulled out of the paddock.” Great description.
Ivory Lane stock hire items that are very transferable for everyone’s different “themes” or style tastes. They have items that suit bohemian, classic and rustic all at once.
For today I just want to stick to talking about the furniture and hire pieces.
Ivory Lane stock what I would call “one-of-a-kind’ chairs and lounges. The kind you’d expect to find in a princess castle, they’re vintage, grand, insanely beautiful, and look really great at a wedding. To find these jaw dropping thrones Jane and Joel have travelled many miles. The couple originally used one for their own wedding.

Ivory Lane are seriously amazing and are kicking major goals. Last year the business was nominated by their satisfied customers for the ABIA (Australian Bridal Industry Academy) Awards. Ivory Lane placed in the top 10 in NSW for multiple categories. CONGRATS!
